We went through a couple of scratchers. Our cat likes the vertical style over the horizontal / chaise or mat style scratchers. I like the weight of it, she hasn't toppled it once. I also like the included toys. She likes sneaking up on the little fuzzballs and whacking them. She's almost chewed through one of the elastic cords, I have contacted the manufacturer and they are sending replacements. :) I've also added a couple of long strings to it for additional play.
